The native species of
Pennsylvania were changed with the introduction of
plants brought here by settlers who knew them from other
lands, and later by those hoping to improve upon nature.
Between the stress of some new plants and simple land
changes brought about by industry and settlers, some
varieties have been "extirpated" or lost from
Pennsylvania. Each Pennsylvania native plant
listed here will be either an endangered or extirpated
native species which will be part of a project intended
to hopefully bring back a colony of that species.
Should you have a favorite that you would like to work
with then please contact us. We'll work to
obtain seeds for members to grow for transplantation or
for direct seeding in specified areas. Hopefully
we will be part of a meadow lands nature trail project
in the future and members will have an opportunity to
reintroduce native species to that area. Some of
those with which we are currently working are listed
below. |
